- Helps you know what vocabulary to focus on/teach
- Allows for questioning throughout the story (not just at the end), helps students think while reading
- Models think aloud (comprehension strategies that successful readers use)
- Allows you to consider author's craft, how you are going to help your students understand
- Can be a way to teach social skills (through character development)
- Choose stories that will help your students connect personally to a topic/idea/character
- Pre-plan for potential rough spots (ie Tales of a 4th grade Nothing outs Santa!!!!!!!!)
- A way to show your passion for books and reading
- Model how books sound (especially for children who are not read to)
- Opportunity to choose high interest/content material
- Way to practice reading behaviors
